Your Friendship Must be a Choice

“Be slow to fall into friendship; but when thou art in, continue firm & constant.”’
– Socrates

Once we were sitting in our college staffroom and had gossiped about friendship. Our senior colleague and professor (not to name him here)told us a short funny story.

He said that once I was walking with my friends in my village and a man approached and said, “ All your friends are beautiful, smart, well-mannered and educated. I have never seen any of your friends who is ugly or uneducated. Why so?”

He said, “ I laughed and told him that I ain’t given the choice to choose my parents or sibling. But for friends, I am given a wide choice. So, why not to choose the best”.

That was the first time this idea struck my mind. Immediately, my mind started to think of my friends and thought about them who to choose and who to avoid. Or whether we have chosen each other or flocked together by luck.

To be honest, I have circles of friends. Not all of them are beautiful or smart physically. But they are smart in their fields and the best people one can have.

Not only that, but a friend must be a well-wisher and a good man. He may not come handy all the time but he must support you physically and emotionally at the time of need.

However, I have a different take on it. A friend is always beautiful and smart or loved one. No matter how he looks or talks. But the mutual feeling of friendship and love matters the most.

If there is a strong bond between friends and it leads to their overall development of life, they are chosen for each other.

Although, sometimes, a friendship just happens and later on, it grows to be the burden and the biggest regret of life.

That is why friendship must be a CHOICE!!!

Because they either break your life or make your life.

“In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”
– Martin Luther King, Jr.
